Tips for CURLY Hair

Hair Information

If you weren’t born with natural curly hair, at some point in your life you’ve probably dreamt of wearing gorgeous curls. Curls are fun and definitely a style you may want to try, however make sure you are ready for the challenge and equipped with all the information you need to maintain and manage bouncy, frizz free, soft and easy to manage curls. These tips are great for kinky, loose, tight, afro, natural and any curl pattern in between.

1. Curly hair requires more maintenance then straight or wavy hair.

2. Ditch your BRUSH, and NEVER comb curls with a small tooth comb. Always finger comb or style with a wide tooth comb and comb curls in sections, from the bottom up to the root. NEVER comb curls out when the hair is dry, this can cause the hair to tangle and break off. Moisturize the hair before thoroughly combing curls.

3. NEVER sleep on a full head of curls with out detangling! Always comb curls thoroughly before bed. Finger part your curls down the center and braid hair into (2) Indian braids, or pull hair up into a high bun to protect the hair from tangling/matting while sleep.

4. Always, always, always sleep with a silk scarf, bonnet, or satin pillow case to protect your curls and keep the moisture in the hair. Cotton scarfs or pillow cases can adversely affect the shine of the hair and suck out all the moistures which will ultimately cause the hair to dry out.

5. Choosing the right products for curls is extremely important. You want to make sure you use a high quality Sulfate-Free shampoo and deep conditioner. We recommend you finger comb your curls thoroughly before wetting the hair, as an added softener its good to pre-condition your curls before you wash. So basically wet the combed out curls, add a conditioner first, rinse, shampoo then deep condition. This method will soften the hair before the actual wash and allow for the conditioning product to penetrate during the cleansing process.

6. Winter month can be a nightmare for curls. We all know how cold weather, rain and mist can affect our hair, be it natural or human donor hair. Curls can be difficult to manage during these months if not cared for properly. They will need more attention because of the frizz from the damp and moist conditions. Its going to be important t wear your curls away from high collars, jackets, coats, scarfs, turtle necks, etc. The friction from the hair rubbing back and forth across clothing will definitely dry the hair out and cause it to tangle and matt horribly! So if you’ve experienced tangling or matting at the nape, this may be the reason.
During the winter months you will need to protect your curls as much as possible by wearing them in styles up and away from the friction of clothing. You will need to cover your hair from the outdoor elements as much as possible to avoid excessive dryness. Make sure to add an anti-frizz serum to your regimen during the cold weather months to keep the hair soft, manageable, and moisturized.

7. Stay far away from heavy, sticky, thick products for curls. These products may have your curls looking good for a short time. However, they will weigh the hair down quick and cause build up. Once the hair becomes heavy and lifeless, our first reaction is to wash the hair. When the hair is placed under the water it draws up and tangles like a chia pet, and is pure HELL to detangle! So with that being said….. PLEASE stay away from heavy, sticky products, to avoid hours of tedious detangling.
Our recommendation is: Use very little product on your curls, the product should be light weight. Always sample a new product in your hand to determine the weight. You should be able to rub the product in completely in a matter of seconds, do not use a product that leaves a greasy, oily film in your hand. That is a sign the product may be too heavy or greasy and a clear RED FLAG for build up.
When you find the right product for your curls that will compliment the style you want to wear, add it to your hair before styling with a little water, detangler and a leave in conditioner. After styling, leave the curls alone! KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF YOUR HEAD. Re-spritz your hair with your mixture if needed to freshen up your style. After you re-style… KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF YOUR HEAD. If you leave the curls alone they will feel soft and bouncy, and look well defined. You will not have the look of bushy, out of control hair that swells up right before your eyes.

8. Last but not least. Its always best to bond a quality hair to your natural hair when wearing weaves/extensions. You do not want to add a synthetic or cheap non-remy hair to your natural hair. The texture of a poor quality hair can be to harsh and the fibers can cause your natural hair to dry, and shed. So make sure you choose only top quality hair such as the products used by California Lace Wigs & Weaves against your natural tresses. Don’t cut corners when it comes to protecting and caring for your natural hair.
